Steel striker (traditional fire steel)
Since the beginning of time people in different countries, on different continents yielded the fire. Along with the technological development the ways of making fire changed much, so today very few people know how to yield the fire with a steel striker (a fire steel) and a flint.
It is interesting, that today in Russian language the “ognivo" (the fire steel) and the “kresalo" (the steel striker) are almost synonyms. The historical and older name is the “kresalo". It springs from the action that was done with this instrument – the Russian verb “kresat" means that the blade struck the sharp edge of the stone. The spark came from chipping small pieces of steel off the striker. The “ognivo" (the fire steel) is the later term, that was extended after the translation of the fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen.
In our Internet-shop you can find forged fire steels produced by hand labor – unique objects, which will be functional instruments for lighting fire, and original presents for men.
The company “MakeYourFire” reconstructs the ancient method of yielding the fire with the help of the steel striker (the fire steel), flint and the tinder. With these instruments people struck the spark, fanned the fire with care and yielded the fire through many centuries.
We reconstructed forgotten and partly lost way of getting the fire alight. Now as many centuries ago young and old can yield the fire without assistance.
Carefully chosen natural materials and easy-to-learn technique will turn ordinary ignition of the fireplace, oven, brazier or just making the campfire into fascinating and beautiful process. It will be interesting for children and the grown-ups, who knew about sparks and flints only from books before.
